Yamaha have long provided full 5.1 surround sound packages in a single box. Giving you the speakers, subwoofer and AV receiver you need to get your home theatre system of the ground.
The YHT-1840 is their latest 5.1-channel home theatre package that just delivers great sound and passes 4K resolution from your source straight to your TV in an affordable package.
You get a passive subwoofer out of the box but have the option to drive a pre-amp for something you may already have. There are also 4 satellite speakers and a larger centre speaker to fit your entertainment space. This model lets you either arrange the speakers in the right spaces or to place them as if they were separate components of a soundbar and virtually create the soundscape around you.
You get 4 HDMI in and 1 out with full 4K Ultra HDR support and you can take advantage of eARC or Active Control depending on your how you different devices all interact.
The AV receiver itself takes on a traditional form factor. There are no frills but it performs brilliantly. The OSD shows you what's being driven but for a better user experience your actions are projected on your screen too.

Our thoughts
We had a predecessor to this system, the YHT-196 and this was an upgrade for us after 10 years with that system that could only handle 1080p and you had to control everything on the tiny OSD.
The quality of the parts and the sound it outputs is great and with the addition of on TV screen menus, it's a breeze to use.
For the price of a unit alone from other manufacturers you get everything you need, including a passive subwoofer. OK, there's no WiFi, ethernet, AirPlay or Alexa, but in our experience they're rarely needed. Your TV or media centre has all the apps you need and can pass video and audio through it without any additional configuration.
